Gray Rock works because narcissists feed on reactions.

They need your emotion, your attention, your engagement. They provoke, push boundaries, and create drama because your response is their supply.

When you stop giving them anything interesting, they move on.

Gray Rock means: be boring. Give minimal responses. No emotion. No details. No engagement.

Like a gray rock. Unremarkable. Uninteresting. Not worth their time.

Here’s how to do it in every situation where you can’t just leave.

When to Use Gray Rock

Gray Rock works when you’re stuck with someone and can’t go no contact:

  • Family members at holidays/weddings/funerals

  • Co-parent you share custody with

  • Coworker you can’t avoid

  • Boss until you find another job

  • Ex you share assets/property with

Gray Rock doesn’t work when:

  • You’re in immediate danger (prioritize safety, not strategy)

  • You’re in active custody dispute (document everything, don’t minimize)

  • You need to establish boundaries (Gray Rock is for maintenance, not confrontation)

If you can leave completely, leave. Gray Rock is for situations where leaving isn’t an option yet.
